Practice Testing (Self-Quizzing)
What it is: Retrieving information from memory on a low-stakes quiz, flashcard, practice exam, or recall prompt—without notes or rereading first.
Why the research backs it: Every study shows the same pattern: Roediger & Karpicke (2006) found that repeated retrieval practice—even when you get some answers wrong—produces far better retention than rereading. The mechanism is direct: pulling information from memory strengthens the neural pathways that encode it. Testing also exposes gaps you didn't know you had, a signal that rereading never gives.
How to do it this week: After each lecture, spend 10 minutes writing down 5–10 questions you'd expect on a quiz. Come back three days later and answer them without notes. Use our flashcard maker to turn key ideas into cue-and-answer pairs. If your course has end-of-chapter problems, do every third one as a practice test.
The most common mistake: Testing only the night before an exam. The benefit compounds when spaced over days or weeks. One test two weeks before exam day is worth more than three tests the week before.
Distributed Practice (Spacing)
What it is: Returning to the same material multiple times across days or weeks, rather than cramming it all into one session.
Why the research backs it: Large-scale meta-analyses spanning decades of research converge on the same finding: spacing beats massing, across age groups and subject areas. When you space study sessions, forgetting between sessions is not a bug—it's the feature. Each time you retrieve partially forgotten material, the retrieval act is harder, and that difficulty is what drives long-term retention. Cramming creates short-term fluency that evaporates within days.
How to do it this week: Use spaced repetition to schedule reviews. Study a topic on Monday, review it Wednesday, again the following Monday. The gap should grow: 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 2 weeks. If your course has midterms and finals, space your study sessions so the final review happens a day before the exam, not the week before.
The most common mistake: Reviewing material you already know well while neglecting weaker material. Use a system (flashcards with spacing algorithms, or a calendar) so forgetting material gets flagged for earlier review.
