What Grade Do I Need on My Final to Get an A?

Calculate the exact score you need on your final exam to finish the course with an A. Most schools set A at 90%, but some use 93% or split A/A−—adjust if your school differs.

How this is calculated

required = (targetcurrent × (1 − w)) / w

target = grade you want in the course, %
current = your average on graded work so far, %
w = final exam weight, as a decimal (e.g., 30% → 0.30)

Assumption: Your current grade is the average of all work graded so far, which makes up (1 − w) of your course grade. Everything ungraded counts toward the final.

Worked example

You have an 84% average on work worth 50% of the course. Your final is 50%. What do you need to finish with an A (90%)?

required = (90 − 84 × (1 − 0.50)) / 0.50
required = (90 − 84 × 0.50) / 0.50
required = (90 − 42) / 0.50
required = 48 / 0.50
required = 96%

You need a 96% on the final to finish with exactly 90%. That's an exceptional score—you'd need near-perfect performance. Verify your current grade and target before committing to this path.

Required final score for an A, by current grade and final weight

This table shows what you need on the final to reach a 90% course grade, given different current grades and final exam weights. All entries assume the standard US A threshold of 90%; if your school uses 93%, add 3 to your target.

Why final weight matters when aiming high

When your target is ambitious—like an A when your current grade is below 90%—the final exam's weight becomes your lifeline or your noose.

With a light final (10–20%): Your current grade dominates. If you're at 84%, the final can barely move you past 85% or 86%, no matter how well you do. The A stays out of reach.

With a heavy final (40–50%): You have real leverage. That same 84% current grade lets you reach 90% with a high final score (around 96% at 50% weight). The path is narrow but possible.

The math: The formula required = (target − current × (1−w)) / w shows it plainly. As w (the final's weight) grows, the denominator grows—and the required score shrinks. Higher weight = more opportunity to move the needle, even if that opportunity demands excellence.

The catch: a heavier final also punishes a poor performance more severely. A zero on a 50% final drops you hard. So while weight gives you leverage to chase the A, it also raises the stakes.

Frequently asked questions

Does A− count as getting an A?

Depends on your school. Most US institutions set A at 90% and A− as a separate lower grade (often 87–89%). Some schools combine both into a single A band. Check your syllabus or registrar's handbook to confirm whether your course distinguishes A from A−, or treats them as one.

What if my school uses 93% as the A cutoff?

Some schools (often stricter programs or elite institutions) set A at 93% instead of 90%. Use the calculator's target field to enter 93 instead of 90, and you'll see the higher score you need. The ledger table above assumes 90%; for 93%, add 3 percentage points to every entry.

Is a 96% on the final realistic?

Scoring above 95% on a final is achievable but demanding—it means near-perfect performance on an exam that covers material you've found challenging (otherwise your current grade would be higher). Extra credit might help if available. Be honest about your realistic ceiling before committing to a narrow path.

What if my current grade is already an A?

You've already secured the A—your grade will stay at least where it is. The calculator will show that you need only 90% on the final to finish at 90%, which you can definitely hit. Even a low final score won't pull you below the A band.

Can I aim for an A+ instead?

Yes. Some schools set A+ at 97% or higher. Enter your school's A+ threshold in the target field and the calculator will show what you need. Most schools reserve A+ for exceptional work—it's reachable but demanding.

What if my final is worth more than 50%?

Enter your actual weight into the calculator. If your final is 70% of your grade, it has enormous leverage—you can recover from a much lower current grade. Conversely, a 0% on a high-weight final is catastrophic. Check your syllabus to confirm the exact weight.
