A strong engineering bullet names the specific thing you made or tested, the tools and standards you used, and a concrete result. The four-part formula works across capstone projects, internships, competition teams, and lab work.

Why each slot matters in engineering
- Design verb: Specific past-tense verbs (Designed, Prototyped, Fabricated, Tested) show hands-on work. "Responsible for" or "helped with" bury your agency.
- Component or system: Name the thing. "3-axis gantry" is clear. "The project" is not. For labs: "pH sensor calibration routine". For structures: "timber bridge beam". Be specific about domain.
- Tools and method: Engineering context is technical. Say "SolidWorks", "MATLAB", "FEA", "off-the-shelf steppers", "competition spec", "safety standards". This shows technical depth. Also name the project context: "for SAE Formula competition", "for senior capstone", "for the controls lab".
- Result: Quantify: tolerance achieved (±0.01mm), cost reduction (30%), load capacity (500 lbs), performance metric, competition placement, or deliverable shipped. If there's no number, name what was delivered or proven: "enabled uninterrupted semester-long experiments" or "passed all safety compliance checks".

"Tutored 6 mechanical engineering students in FEA and GD&T, all passed their design review with distinctions". Freelance and tutoring work prove your depth and communication skills.
How do I handle group projects where I wasn't the lead?
Own your specific contribution, not the whole project. Instead of "Worked on capstone project", write "Designed steering linkage and specified suspension components for student formula car; my parts reduced unsprung mass by 8% and passed vibration testing". Name your subsystem, what you optimized, and what you proved. Your role is clear without overstating your scope.
Should I include tools I'm still learning?
If you've used it hands-on (a course project, an internship task, a competition), include it. "Learned and applied CATIA to design landing gear for capstone" is honest and shows initiative. Don't list tools you've only read about or watched tutorials for; recruiters can tell the difference in the interview. Prioritize tools you've actually built with.
